Reserved Instance (RI) Management

Automatic AWS Reserved Instances (RIs) Utilization Across Accounts

What Are AWS Reserved Instances?

Reserved Instances provide you with a significant discount compared to on-demand Instance pricing. Reserved Instances are not physical instances, but rather a billing discount applied to the use of On-Demand Instances in your account. The trouble with Reserved Instances can be ensuring you actually utilize them, especially when you have many RIs across accounts.

Automatic RI Utilization – 100% RI Utilization With Spotinst

Spotinst Elastigroup, which automatically optimizes your workloads to run on the lowest-cost Instances available, automatically utilizes any Reserved Instances you have purchased across all of your AWS accounts. Before running workloads on Spot Instances, Spotinst will search for available RIs across your AWS accounts and prioritize those RIs, ensuring 100% RI Utilization.

Spotinst enumerates all of the On-Demand and Reserved Instances in your account repeatedly, analyzes their utilization. Upon scale up or provisioning, Elastigroup calculates the most cost-effective option – requesting a new EC2 Spot Instance or Launching an on-demand instance that fits the reservation. Then, Elastigroup automatically provisions or scales to that Instance.

  • Utilize RIs Across All Of Your AWS Accounts – Spotinst searches for purchased RIs across all your AWS EC2 accounts, ensuring your organization is always taking advantage of the RIs you’ve purchased.
  • RI Size Flexibility – Since June 2017, Reserved Instance purchases allow you to utilize the discount not only for the exact Instance size you reserved but for the entire family of the Instance (e.g. all m4 Instances). Spotinst continuously factors this into its calculation to ensure maximum cost-optimization.
